The Scratch Series

Destruction from grooming exposed new meaning.

The Scratch Series began with a relic; a kind of keepsake of one of my cats that died. She had been using the armrest panel of an old sofa as a scratching post, and when it was time to get rid of the sofa I pried off the panel. In my mind, the tattered armrest was something my cat CREATED through repetitive gestures, like she was sculpting the upholstery and batting. Watching her clawing and digging at the sofa is what inspired me to create “Wingback I,” mimicking her actions to discover what was inside the chair.

Wingback I was created by reconfiguring parts of an old chair to form a pair of "wings." Theoretically, this object could be worn; but I am more intrigued by the idea that everyday objects contain souls, and my sacrilegious way of finding them is to tear things apart to see what's inside.

Internal treasures… seep from wounds.

In Wingback II the surface skin is pierced and insides are revealed. As the scratching continued with my other cats on a different chair a new opportunity presented itself. I added gold leaf, precious and semi-precious gemstones to the insides of a housecat-distressed and deconstructed wingback chair.

Hidden gems reveal themselves.

Scratch repurposes a cushion that used to be part of a sofa that my cats would sleep and groom themselves on. The act of scratching is both a mark-making (imprinting on the cats’ environment) and also self-care (cats sharpening their claws).
